New Orleans officers convicted over Katrina shootings

Pandora Charms Bracelets A US federal jury has convicted five police officers in New Orleans over fatal shootings in the chaotic aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Two unarmed residents were killed and four others wounded in the incident on the Danziger Bridge after the 2005 storm. But the jury decided that neither of the fatal shootings was a murder. 'Falsify reports' Brandon Flower Jersey During the five-week trial, prosecutors said that police shot six unarmed people on the Danziger Bridge on the morning of 4 September 2005, less than one week after the storm struck New Orleans. The US justice department said that the evidence at the trial had established that three officers opened fire on an unarmed family on the east side of the bridge, killing a 17- year-old boy and wounding four other members of the family. Forty-year-old Ronald, who had severe mental disabilities, was shot dead as he tried to run away. UGG Tasman Slipper In closing testimony on Tuesday, Assistant US Attorney Theodore Carter said police had no justification for shooting unarmed people attempting to cross the Danziger in search of food days after Katrina struck. "It was unreasonable for these officers to fire even one shot, let alone dozens," he had said. 'Healing power' Lawyers representing the officers argued the police were shot at before they returned fire and believed their lives were in danger. tiffany necklace But, according to the US justice department, Kaufman and the other officers tried to make the shootings appear justified by creating a cover-up. Kaufman claimed to have found a gun - which he had actually taken from his own home - on the bridge the day after the shooting. He also invented fictional witnesses and witness statements to justify the officer's actions. He faces a maximum sentence of 120 years in prison. Since Katrina, the New Orleans police department has been the target of allegations of corruption and brutality. tiffany and co outlet "This was a critical verdict. I cannot overstate the importance of this verdict," US Attorney Jim Letten said. "The power, the message it sends to the community, the healing power it has," he added. Mr Wallace, who is from Las Vegas, is charged with six counts of electronic mail fraud, three counts of intentional damage to a protected computer and two counts of criminal contempt. Facebook sued Mr Wallace in 2009 and a federal judge ordered him not to access Facebook's computer network. However, prosecutors say he repeatedly violated that order earlier this year. Governments, IOC and UN hit by massive cyber attack

IT security firm McAfee claims to have uncovered one of the largest ever series of cyber attacks. Brandon Marshall Jersey It lists 72 different organisations that were targeted over five years, including the International Olympic Committee, the UN and security firms. McAfee will not say who it thinks is responsible, but there is speculation that China may be behind the attacks. Beijing has always denied any state involvement in cyber-attacks, calling such accusations "groundless". Speaking to BBC News, McAfee's chief European technology officer, Raj Samani, said the attacks were still going on. Pandora Bracelet Charms "This is a whole different level to the Night Dragon attacks that occurred earlier this year. Those were attacks on a specific sector. This one is very, very broad." Dubbed Operation Shady RAT - after the remote access tool that security experts and hackers use to remotely access computer networks - the five-year investigation examined information from a number of different organisations which thought they may have been hit. "From the logs we were able to see where the traffic flow was coming from," said Mr Samani. "In some cases, we were permitted to delve a bit deeper and see what, if anything, had been taken, and in many cases we found evidence that intellectual property (IP) had been stolen. Cheap Football cleats "The United Nations, the Indian government, the International Olympic Committee, the steel industry, defence firms, even computer security companies were hit," he added. China speculation McAfee said it did not know what was happening to the stolen data, but it could be used to improve existing products or help beat a competitor, representing a major economic threat. "This was what we call a spear-phish attack, as opposed to a trawl, where they were targeting specific individuals within an organisation," said Mr Samani. tiffany jewelry outlet "An email would be sent to an individual with the right level of access within the system; attached to the message was a piece of malware which would then execute and open a channel to a remote website giving them access. "Once they had access to an organisation, they either did what we would call a 'smash-and-grab' operation, where they would try and grab as much information before they got caught, or they sometimes embedded themselves in the network and [tried to] spread across different systems within an organisation." Mr Samani said his firm would "not make any guesses on where this has come from", but China is seen by many in the industry as a prime suspect. Carolina Panthers Jerseys Jim Lewis, a cyber expert with the Centre for Strategic and International Studies, was quoted by the Reuters news agency as saying it was "very likely China was behind the campaign because some of the targets had information that would be of particular interest to Beijing". "Everything points to China. It could be the Russians, but there is more that points to China than Russia," Lewis said. However, Graham Cluley - a computer-security expert with Sophos, is not so sure. He said: "Every time one of these reports come out, people always point the finger at China." tiffany outlet He told BBC News: "We cannot prove it's China. That doesn't mean we should be naive. Every country in the world is probably using the internet to spy. "After all, it's easy and cost-effective - but there's many different countries and organisations it could be." Mr Cluley said firms were often distracted by the very public actions of LulzSec and Anonymous, groups of online activists who have hacked a number of high-profile websites in recent months. "Sometimes it's not about stealing your money or publicly leaking your data. It's about quietly stealing your information, which can have a very high political, military or financial value. "Spotify is strongly contesting PacketVideo's claim." tiffany rings on sale The lawsuit is the latest in a growing number of patent wrangles that have set tech firms against each other. The situation led Kent Walker, Google's top lawyer, to decry the "explosion in patent litigation" which "threatens to stifle innovation". tiffany necklace

Republicans attack Obama as they push their budget plan

Republicans have lined up to renew their attack on US President Barack Obama over the country's looming debt default deadline. cheap nfl jerseys store At the Republican HQ in Washington DC, House Speaker John Boehner said his budget plan was reasonable, while Mr Obama wanted a "blank cheque". House Majority Leader Eric Cantor said Mr Obama had no plan of his own. White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said it was a "fallacy" to suggest the president had not made proposals. After weeks of deadlocked budget negotiations, Washington still has no deal to raise its borrowing limit by the 2 August deadline. cheap tiffany jewelry The federal government runs a budget deficit that topped $1.5tn (£920bn) this year, and has amassed a national debt of $14.3tn. 'Billionaires irrelevant' In prime-time back-to-back TV addresses on Monday evening, Mr Obama and Mr Boehner accused each other of intransigence on the debt issue. Speaking on Tuesday alongside Eric Cantor, Mr Boehner said: "I think I made it pretty clear last night: the president's looking for a blank cheque." Mr Boehner is advocating a two-step plan, a short-term bill to cut spending by about $1.2tn (£730bn) and extend the debt ceiling for about six months. tiffany necklace online "It's reasonable," Mr Boehner said. "It's responsible. It can pass the House, and it can pass the Senate." Mr Boehner called on members of both parties to consider supporting his "common sense plan... to put America's fiscal house back in order" when it arrived on the floor of the House on Wednesday. Mr Cantor said of Mr Obama's speech on Monday night: "There was no evidence that he has a plan. He doesn't like our plan, but he has not put a plan forward yet. New Ugg Boots "The president spent a lot of time talking about millionaires, billionaires, corporate jet owners, things that have nothing to do with the debate right now." House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy stepped up alongside Mr Boehner and Mr Cantor and said Mr Obama had made "a pretty political speech" the evening before. Mr Obama condemned the Republican plan on Monday during his TV address, in part because it would require another round of debt limit talks in six months. On Tuesday, the Office of Management and Budget said in a statement that the Obama administration "strongly opposes" the Republican plan, adding that if it is presented to Mr Obama "the president's senior advisors would recommend that he veto this bill". Cheap Pandora Jewelry Aides to Mr Boehner later noted that the statement did not commit the president to a veto. "By signing the House bill, the president could quickly end the crisis atmosphere he's created and demonstrate he's serious about cutting spending," said Brendan Buck, a spokesman for Mr Boehner. 'Playing chicken' In the Senate on Tuesday, Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid challenged Republicans to back his plan - a no-taxes, government-cuts proposal to trim $2.7tn over a decade. tiffany rings sale It would protect social programmes for the poor and elderly and a public pension programme - all popular among Democrats, while not raising new tax revenue. The 10-year plan includes $1.2tn in cuts to defence and other discretionary spending and $1tn in savings from winding down the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Later on Tuesday, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney accused the Republicans of trying "to play chicken with our economy". He said Mr Reid's plan was a much better option because it "represents compromise". "The United States hit its debt limit in May, and since May the treasury secretary... has exercised all the wiggle room available to him and that runs out on August 2," Mr Carney said. tiffany & co outlet He added: "It's whistling past the graveyard to suggest that it's some sort of game and the risks aren't enormous, because they are." If the debt ceiling was not raised, the US Treasury could run out of money to pay all of its bills - which could lead to interest rate rises, threaten the US economy and in turn the global recovery.
